Some new research on naps

Here’s a link to a great write up on why naps are so important.  Many times parents believe that their child at 2 – 2 1/2 years of age have finished napping. What’s happening is typical toddler behaviour where they are getting a little more control and sometimes decide they are just not going to sleep that day. This is common and happens often but it’s not to say they don’t need to sleep. What you will find is that this will change in a day or so of no nap behaviour if you stick to your usual routine and they will be happily napping again in short order. Most children need to nap until age 4 – 5 years.  Here’s why naps are crucial:

Fussy Baby or Sleep Disorder

Here’s a great article to read to decipher if your baby has a sleep ‘disturbance’ (generally behavioural/environmental in nature) versus a ‘disorder’ which is more related to a medical condition.  It is not common for babies to snore (unless of course they have a cold and are congested). If your baby snores on a regular basis and isn’t sick, it’s best to get it checked out by your paediatrician/family doctor.  Here’s some additional great information:

The End of Daylight Savings Time

This morning Jennifer was a guest on Breakfast TV Vancouver. You can see a clip here:

http://video.citytv.com/video/detail/1262959160001.000000/how-daylight-savings-affects-our-sleep/

Many little ones don’t know that the clock has fallen back by an hour and are up earlier. Here are some things to help with the time change:

1. Keep a regular schedule e.g. napping times, eating times, and getting to bed time.
2. Use the natural light to wake up – open the blinds when it’s wake up time.
3. Get out into the natural light early in the day, this helps set the circadian rhythm.
